Putin: Government should work to boost economic growth

MOSCOW, Dec 25 (PRIME) -- The Russian government has created a stable macroeconomic basis, but current economic growth is not good enough, President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday at a government meeting.

“Among the things that can only be seen as positive is creation of a good macroeconomic basis for development. It is obviously a unique result, as the government together with the central bank have reached the lowest ever level of inflation, nothing this kind has happened in modern history,” he said.

“But it is obvious that these growth dynamics that we’ve achieved are not enough. We know this well, we’ve talked about this many times. We need to do everything possible to speed up economic growth, to improve its structure and quality,” he said.

The national projects and development goals should ensure that, he said.

The government is also constantly discussing low inflation. “We’ve said that maybe we should not aim at what we have today and should give more money to the economy, speed it up a little. But it is only a conjunctive mood. But the fact that the macroeconomic basis creates opportunities for growth is obvious,” he said.

The Economic Development Ministry expects the Russian economy to grow by 1.3% in 2019.
